Standard Chartered Marathon 2009 - SAVs & Fighters

SAVs & Wheelchair Atheletes
Report by Jon Wong
Community Facilitator
The SAVs were in action again in this year's annual Standard Chartered Marathon, to marshal for the wheelchair atheletes in the wheelchair race. The route spans across the Esplanade bridge and spirals through Shenton Way, Marina Boulevard and The Padang, which was also the route used by the marathon runners in the initial phase of the marathon.
Each athelete were accompanied by skaters who help to direct them and clear the route for them, amidst the sea of marathon runners. This is to ensure that they have a smooth race and not collide into anything or anyone.
It was an enriching experience to skate alongside the wheelchair atheletes as we witnessed their determination to overcome their physical disabilities with their mental strengths and sheer arm power. It made us realise and appreciate how fortunate we were to be skating, and they certainly earned our respect with their positive attitute and personalities.
Many thanks to the following SAVs for assisting in the event:
David, Moon, Jack, Faussi, Susanna, Xin Yi, Lay Suan, Phillip, Jessica & team leader, Chun Yang.
