Safra Quadthlon 2010 - Skate Assist Volunteers in action
Report by Jon Wong
Skate Assisit Volunteer
The Skate Assisit Volunteers were in action yet again at Safra Quadthlon this year. Covering the 12km skating route, 24 dedicated volunteers marshalled the contestants, while directing public park users at the same time.
This is one of the events that pushes sportmen and sportwomen to higher limits, and is also one of the few that saw such a large gathering of volunteers. Competitors had to skate 3 laps around the skating 4km skating route, which spanned from Carpark F2 till the National Sailing Centre. The skating segment is the 2nd the 4 events, after the 500 metres open sea swim.
Drizzles graced the event grounds in the early hours, making the competition harder for the skaters, as the ground was wet and very slippery. That proved to be a huge challenge at sharp turns, and a handful of skaters fell. But everyone was able to bear with the scratches and bruises and continued the competition, with the aim of completion more valued than bagging the title.
Amongst the volunteers was 49 year old Mr Vincent Lye, who returned to volunteer his time for this. He joined the SAVs since 2004 but work and family commitment caused him to be absent for a while. But now he is back with us again, and we truly welcomed this senior volunteer warmly.
We would like to thank the following SAVs for committing their time for this event:
Jessica, Eric, Simon, Eugene, Chong Boon, Kenny, Leonard, Philip, Chun Yang, Lay Suan, Susanna, Ruth, David, Jack, Steven, Timothy, Vincent, and recruits Meiching, Esther, Merv and Chloe.
