SNS August 2008 Report - Park Connector Nightskate

Report by Jon Wong
Skateline Instructor

We recently completed our latest nightskate in August. Though there was wet weather before, but it did not deter the skaters who showed up, which amounts to almost 50 people. This time round, we travelled on 3 Park Connectors, namely Siglap, Tampines and Pasir Ris, as part of the collaboration with NParks to promote their Park Connectors.

We started off at about 8pm, travelling along East Coast Park before we turned into Siglap Park Connector. That was also the first major challenge for the skaters, as we had to cross an overhead bridge without steps, but steep slopes instead. Going up and coming down wasn't easy, but the SAVs were on had to render assistance when required.

There were many slopes and difficult terrain to tackle after that, as we made our way past Kembangan MRT Station and Bedok MRT Station. Some skaters fell, but fortunately, no one was seriously injured. The aftermath of the rain contributed to the difficulty.

There were some new faces who joined our SNS for the first time, and it was great to see them having fun skating with us and giving us a good review. Some were from the public, and some were students who were under our Learn-To-Skate programme, who have become competent to do urban skating, and that gave the instructors alot of satisfaction.

The journey was long, and we had a couple of stop-overs at Bedok, and Tampines area. We finally arrive at our destination at around 11pm, and everyone was satisfied and happy that they have completed the feat. For some, it was their first time doing this, and i'm sure it will be in their memories.

The SAVs were out in full force, with over 15 volunteers on duty to ensure safety. Much credit must be given to our 2 junior SAVs, Eric Tay and Tjin Teck, aged 10 and 11 years respectivey. The boys stayed with a skater, and looked after him throughout the journey, guiding him through slopes and difficult terrain. They displayed good conduct and deserved to be praised for their efforts.

Many thanks to the following SAVs who volunteered their time to be on duty.
David Lim, Phillip Chan, Mike Tan, Jason Ng, Chun Yang, Xinyi, Susanna, Patrick, Li Lee, Steven, Kenny, Jay Len, Shane, Simon, Timothy, Jack, Alex, Tok Cheng, Eric, Tjin Teck, Eng Keong, Wai Him, Shun Git & Siew Ying.
