SNS April 2008 Report - Skating with our National Adventurer

Report by Jon Wong

We are very proud to have Mr Khoo Swee Chiow, our National Adventurer,  who holds the World Record as the man with the longest journey on inline skates, to grace our SNS in April, together with his family.

Though the weather was rainy in the earlier part of the day, but that did not dampen the spirit of the skaters who turned up to support our Nightskate. Around 30 skaters showed up at Expo MRT station, where we flagged off at around 8pm. We welcomed some new faces, Jane with her family, Suneetha and her friend, Janice.

Besides our safety vehicle, we were privileged to also have Mrs Khoo supporting us along the way with her car, and from one of our SAVs, Kelvin Ho. The other SAVs ensuring our safety were Jason, Eng Keong, Philip and Junior SAVs, Shane(Philip's son) and Chelsea (Kelvin's daughter). David Lim was our photographer for the evening, and all pictures are courtesy of him. (See Pics here)

There were more children this time round, and it was so encouraging to see the next generation skating so well and taking on the responsibilities of looking after their friends.

It was a casual skating route, which saw us through Upper Changi Rd East,  along the MRT route, past Tanah Merah Station and Bedok Station. Though we were skating along the pavements, but there were still some challenging obstacles and slopes that the skaters had to tackle, which puts their skating skills to the test.

We promptly arrived at the Siglap Park Connector, and went all the way till the overhead bridge, which carried us over ECP Expressway.

The highlight of the SNS was the presentation at our Skateline ECP outlet by Mr Khoo at the end, which showcased videos and pictures of his adventures through the different countries he has been to during his record attempt. Everyone had a great time asking questions and grimacing at the unique delicacies, especially the barbequed spiders they had in Cambodia.

Thankfully, the weather was fine throughout the journey. Everyone enjoyed themselves with the skating and fellowship with each other, some hanging out for supper even after the SNS was over. It was a great feeling to have so many friends who enjoyed the sport, and it sure was a great way to spend a Saturday evening.
